Alumni Association

Distinguished Alumni Society

One of our more ambitious and successful endeavors the past few years has been the formation of the Distinguished Alumni Society at Lake Land College. The Distinguished Alumni Society recognizes alumni who have utilized the Lake Land experience to make an imprint on their profession or community. An alumnus is anyone who has graduated from Lake Land College or has taken classes.

Hometown: Mattoon, IL

Profession/Occupation: Broadcast and Emerging Media Specialist Faculty / XLR Radio General Manager
Attended: 1986-87. Laker Nation 2016
Major: Radio/TV Broadcasting

"It is hard to put into words how much of an impact Lake Land College has had on my career and my life. The seed of radio broadcasting was planted on Saturday mornings when the Mattoon High School radio club students were each given a half hour to play records and learn how to work the broadcast console. That love of radio carried over into my years taking classes, building friendships, and working for WLKL. I cannot overstate the importance of having hands on experience like running air shifts, writing and recording news, and broadcasting Laker basketball and baseball games. These kinds of experiences helped me tremendously in my broadcasting career. I eventually founded and became General Manager of a college radio station at Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina and was elected to serve on the national board of directors for College Broadcasters Inc. In an audio documentary that I produced that aired on college stations across the country, I was quick to point out the tremendous impact that Lake Land had on my broadcasting career and was able to interview former classmates and instructors. I believe the broadcasting program at Lake Land is tried and tested, is unique for a school of that size, and is a model that can be followed for others who want to be successful in setting up a college media program. I am humbled beyond measure to be nominated and selected as a member of the distinguished alumni society at Lake Land College."

Employer: WAND-TV
Profession/Occupation: Chief Meteorologist
Attended: Laker Nation 2001
Major: Earth Science

"I went to a small high school in central Illinois and Lake Land was the perfect fit to start my college career. Smaller class sizes and the one on one interaction with the instructors really helped to enhance my college experience. The education and hands on experience I received at Lake Land not only helped me as I moved on to Eastern, but I still use it today in my career.
The real world broadcasting experience I received at WLKL really drove home the point that broadcasting and weather was my passion and what I wanted to do!"

"Lake Land College afforded me the opportunity to attend college and graduate debt free. After receiving my certificate and working a few years, I felt the need to go back to Lake Land College and finish my Associate in Science. I was amazed at the care the instructors gave and the help I received. The faculty wanted to see the students succeed. I was so impressed with the classroom size and the ease at which they prepared me to go on to graduate from Eastern Illinois University Lumpkin School of Business."

Katie Williams

Teutopolis, IL
Hometown: Teutopolis, IL
Employer: Minnesota Twins (retired)
Profession/Occupation: Athletic Trainer
Attended: Laker Nation 1992
Major: Associate in Science

"One of the main reasons I attended Lake Land College was to play baseball. After I realized I was not destined to make the Major Leagues, I decided to forgo my athletic dreams and concentrate on my educational voyage. Lake Land College enabled me to ease into my college career without having to move away to a four year school. I was not sure what I wanted to do when I finished high school. Lake Land gave me the opportunity to explore different avenues and after my two years, I moved on to SIUC. Lake Land gave me the confidence and foundation that I needed to be successful in my career path of being an Athletic Trainer."

Gary Sullivan

Katie Williams

Fairview, PA
Hometown: Effingham, IL
Employer: Mercyhurst University
Profession/Occupation: Assistant Professor, Risk Management
Attended: Laker Nation 1987
Major: Business Administration

"I enjoyed my experience at Lake Land College as upon graduating I was prepared for the rigors of attending a four-year university. At that time, I was unable to afford the tuition at a university so I was able to go to school at LLC and work a full-time job. The education was well-rounded and transferred easily to the University of Illinois. While attending LLC, I made many friends who were just as eager to learn and grow as I was. The foundations established at LLC gave me the confidence and ability to succeed at the next levels academically and professionally. I am now in the classroom teaching the fundamentals of my profession to the next generation and I hope I exude the same enthusiasm that my instructors did at Lake Land College."
