Lake Land College cheerleaders place first at competition, heading to finals
Posted on February 13, 2013
The 2012-2013 Lake Land College Cheerleading Team recently brought home the first place trophy from JAMfest JAM-Bash, a national cheerleading competition held in St. Louis. The team is now on its way to the JAMfest National finals, which will be held in Indianapolis on April 13.
“The team decided to participate in this competition just three weeks before the event,” said Dessie Boeser, assistant cheerleading coach. “It was a little nerve-wracking during those three weeks of intense practices, but the team pulled together and took it all the way!”
For the competition, the team was required to perform a two-and-a-half minute routine that consisted of dance, jumps, tumbling and stunts. According to Boeser, the team really pulled together to perform their best which amazed her because some team members had never tumbled before and others had not tumbled in years.
“This year's team is so strong and has overcome a lot of obstacles,” said Boeser. “I am so proud of this team and the journey we have been through together. At the competition, each team member went out there and owned that floor like they had been doing it their whole life, and that’s why they managed to come out as number one.
The members of this year’s competing squad are: Rio Long, Paris; Chelsey Smith, Sullivan; Amber Wakeland, Herrick; Kylie Mumm, Monticello; Lexi Romack, Neoga; Taylor Janes, Mattoon; Andrew Deremiah, Mattoon; Sara Carroll, Sullivan; Kacie Royse, Mattoon; Kelsey Reardon, Altamont; Kenzi Starwalt; Jewett; Erika Roderick, Neoga; Tyler Mosier, Sullivan; and Kaylee Johnston, Shelbyville.
