Lake Land College announces annual Outstanding Club Award winners
The Future Educators of America (FEA) received the Outstanding Club Award at the 2014 annual Lake Land College Club Recognition Luncheon held recently.
Over the past year, FEA participated and facilitated numerous activities that benefited both the club and community. Activities included hosting various speakers each month at club meetings to give future educators insight on their field of study, volunteering for the Special Olympics Family Festival, participating in PET Equestrian Therapy, making Valentine cards for St. Jude patients and collecting and donating pajamas for One Stop Community Christmas, to name a few.
To be eligible for this honor and considered an active student club, each club must accomplish its objectives as stated in the club’s constitution and bylaws, maintain a high attendance and participation record of its members, maintain adequate minutes of its meeting and records of its activities, have an up-to-date roster of its members and officers, have complete and accurate financial records of its activities and be a solvent organization. The club must present this information to the Student Government Association (SGA).
The club advisor must then submit an application and a statement evaluating the club’s activities. The applications will be evaluated by the SGA vice president and approved by the SGA.
Additionally, Emily Buhnerkempe, mathematics instructor and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society’s advisor, received the Outstanding Club Advisor Award. Buhnerkempe was recognized for her caring and compassionate work with PTK. According to club members, Buhnerkempe is very involved in the direction and planning of the club and works hard to help all students feel special.
“Even though Emily has a busy teaching schedule, she seems to always find the time to help anyone in the club,” wrote members of PTK in the nomination form. “Emily is a humble person and would never ask to be nominated for this award, which is one more reason the officers of PTK believe she is deserving of it.”
The following clubs were nominated for the Outstanding Club Award in addition to FEA: BGLADD, the Broadcasting Club, the Human Services Club, the Criminal Justice Club and Club IT. Honorable mention went to the Broadcasting Club, advised by Greg Powers, the Human Services Club, advised by Helen Hendren and Linda Gates; and the Criminal Justice Club, advised by Dustin Heuerman and Randy Ervin. The runner up for the Outstanding Club Award went to Club IT, advised by Scott Rhine and Angela Davison.
Additionally, the following advisors were nominated by their respective clubs, for the Outstanding Club Advisor Award: Greg Powers, Broadcasting Club; Helen Hendren, Human Services Club; Dustin Heuerman, Criminal Justice Club and Angela Davison, Club IT.
The luncheon event was hosted by the SGA and recognized more than 20 clubs at Lake Land College.
