Lake Land College hosts Illinois GIS Association regional meeting

May 29, 2014
The Lake Land College Kluthe Center set the stage for the first Illinois GIS Association (ILGISA) regional meeting, which attracted area professionals working in utilities, economic development, surveying and municipal governments. ILGISA's current president, Keith Nightlinger, and president-elect, Andrew Vitale, also attended the event to promote ILGISA's interest in developing geospatial technologies in down-state Illinois.
During the event, attendees met with industry leaders in GIS mapping and learned how they are successfully leveraging geospatial mapping technology in developing more efficient organizations.  Specific issues included the development, staffing and return on investment for city, county, and utility agencies and organizations using GIS technology in Illinois.
Guest speakers at the event included Mike Rudibaugh, Lake Land College Earth science and geography instructor, who spoke on economic geography and his work with the National Science Foundation; Kelly Lockhart, executive director for Coles County Regional Planning Commission; Bill Teichmiller, CEO of EJ Water Cooperative, Inc.; Mark Toalson, IT director for the City of Champaign; and Thomas Tym, senior project manager for Ruekert-Mielke.
“Geospatial technology and the jobs connected to that industry are changing and growing by leaps and bounds,” said Josh Bullock, Lake Land College president. “Having these tools and the technicians to do the jobs can have a profound impact on a global, regional and local level.”
Lake Land College offers a certificate program in Geospatial Technology that provides students with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to develop and manage geographic information projects and to interpret and implement GIS as a decision support system.
