Student realizes college and career goals through Lake Land College’s Work and Learn Program

August 11, 2014

For Sheryle Hendry of Brocton, the Work and Learn Program at Lake Land College was an invaluable resource, one that enabled her to reach her college and career goals.

“I can't put a value on the Work and Learn Program,” said Hendry. “Not only did it pay my tuition, the encouragement and support that I received from the ladies in that department is what got me through the rough patches.  When I thought I couldn't do it, they cheered me on.  I truly believe that if not for them and the program, I would not have completed college.”

Through the Work and Learn Program, the college provides a complete tuition waiver opportunity to adults who are currently unemployed or underemployed in order for them to earn a career certificate or associate degree.

Students who are accepted into the Work and Learn program work 10 hours per week on-campus in a designated position and in turn, receive a full tuition waiver to attend Lake Land full-time. Students enrolled in the program gain employment knowledge and skills that will help them transition into the workforce while earning a degree or certificate.

Hendry, who completed the physical therapy assistant program at Lake Land, worked in Career Services 10 hours a week as a student. In this position, she maintained the job board, wrote articles about local employers for social media and assisted students who sought resources from that department.

At first, Hendry said this opportunity through the Work and Learn Program seemed too good to be true. She said that she was not eligible to receive any other forms of financial aid besides taking out student loans, but once she applied and was accepted, she was thrilled to take on this opportunity.

Hendry said that coming to school later in life, as a non-traditional student can be very scary, but that through the Work and Learn Program, she received the support she needed to succeed.

“Being a late in life student can be very scary,” said Hendry. “Many times you feel like this is your ‘last shot’ or ‘you are too old.’ But that wasn’t the case. If anything, they encourage you more.  I was never made to feel that I was too old or didn't belong.  Attending Lake Land and participating in Work and Learn is an experience I would recommend to anyone.”

Upon graduating from Lake Land, Hendry obtained a position as a physical therapist assistant in Tilton and she is very thankful to have a career she loves.
Requirements for the Work and Learn students are as follows.  Students must:
•    reside in the Lake Land College district;
•    be 24 years of age or older;
•    have a high school diploma or GED; and
•    earned less than 30 credit hours OR have not taken a college credit class within the past 5 years.

To apply for this opportunity, applicants must complete the application and submit it to the Student Assistance Specialist in the Counseling Services Department along with the Lake Land College Intent to Enroll form which can be found online at http://www.lakeland.cc.il.us/dv/fd/work_learn/.  Students will be required to complete the FAFSA prior to beginning the work assignment.

Students needing assistance applying for this program should contact the Student Assistance Specialist at 217-234-5473, or stop by Counseling or Career Services in the Luther Student Center on campus.
