Lake Land College closes successful federal grant project

August 20, 2014

At the August Board of Trustees meeting, Lake Land College trustees heard a summary report on the Community-Based Jobs Training Grant (CBJT), funded by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The grant, which funded the project “Comprehensive Training in 21st Century Green Job Technology,” sought to train degree-seeking students, incumbent workers, dislocated workers and unemployed district residents for careers in 21st century green job technology. To meet the varying needs of local employers in a variety of closely related green job industries, the college utilized industry feedback to adapt existing courses, developed new courses and created several training options for students.

The grant project ran from July 1, 2010 until June 30, 2014 and targeted fields that fall under the umbrella of “green” technology which include wind and solar energy, geothermal technology and renewable energy management, to name a few. The college was awarded $2.5 million to complete the project.

“The data resulting from this project indicates that the training provided by Lake Land directly led graduates to employment opportunities in both green technology fields and other industries,” said Ron Sanderson, grant project director. “The goals that were set for the grant project were met and in many cases exceeded. I commend those who worked on this project and am happy that we served so many students and helped them reach their college and career goals.”

At the close of the grant project, 1924 total participants were served; 1640 participants completed training; 1453 participants completed a degree or certificate; 1142 participants entered employment and of those, 1095 participants entered employment opportunities directly related to green technology.

Over the course of the grant project, funding was provided to develop a new associate degree in renewable energy and three new certificate curriculums were developed in renewable energy, sustainable energy and renewable energy management. Furthermore, grant funds were used to develop 19 new courses in green energy. Grant funding provided more than $500,000 in scholarships to CBJT eligible students and dislocated workers.
