Talented Student Award Program
(TSA)
The Talented Student Award (TSA) is
a tuition waiver scholarship program for graduating high school
students with outstanding achievement in academics, athletics
and livestock judging who attend Lake Land College as full-time
students.
The Academic Talented Student
Award is for a maximum of two
consecutive calendar years and is awarded by an in-district
high school to two graduates who plan to attend the College.
Each graduate must have a class rank of at least the 85th
percentile. One TSA is awarded to a graduate in a high school
vocational program and the other TSA is awarded to a graduate
in a high school college preparatory program.
The Livestock Judging Team and
Athletic Talented Student Awards are
awarded by Lake Land College coaches for a specific enrollment
period to students who, in their judgement, have outstanding
ability to perform on their team. All tuition and fees for
credit courses are waived except the application and graduation
fees or late fees and special assessments for materials used
in class. The number and administration of the Athletic TSA
are in accordance with the National Junior College Athletic
Association and the Lake Land College Board of Trustees guidelines.
Guidelines for the administration of the Talented Student
Award Program are presented for approval to the Board of Trustees
for three two-year cycles. The TSA guidelines are available
from the Office of the Vice President for Student Services.
Lake Land College Foundation
The Lake Land College Foundation was established exclusively
for educational, scientific, and chairitable purposes. The
Foundation assists the College in developing and enhancing
services to its students, alumni and citizens of the district.
The thrust of the Foundation, however, is to
provide students scholarships through funds contributed by
individuals, agencies and corporations. Thanks to the many
individual and corporate donors to the Lake Land College
Foundation, numerous scholarships are available for students
attending or planning to attend Lake Land College. Each year
over 525 recipients are chosen to receive scholarships from
the more than 1100 applications.
Hope
Scholarship
For students in the first two years
of college. Tax payers will be eligible for a tax credit equal
to 100% of the first $1,000 of tuition and fees and 50% of
the second $1,000. The credit will be available on a per-student
basis for net tuition and fees (less grant aid) paid for college
enrollment after December 31, 1997. The credit is phased out
for joint filers between $80,000 and $100,000 of income, and
for single filers between $40,000 and $50,000 (indexed after
2001). The credit can be claimed in two taxable years (but
not beyond the year when the student completes the first two
years of college) with respect to any individual enrolled
on at least a half-time basis for any portion of the year
Private
Scholarships
Be sure to look into your local community
for possible funding. Often community public service organizations,
local lending institutions, fraternal orders, business clubs
and industries sponsor a variety of private scholarships.
Your state legislators and senators can award scholarships.
In
addition, your regional superintendent of schools may publish
a comprehensive listing of scholarships and grants. The Lake
Land College Virgil H. Judge Learning Resource Center (library)
is an excellent resource, too. Contact the library's circulation
desk for assistance.
