Posted on December 11, 2013
Lake Land College recently recognized and honored students in the Trio Student Support Services program at its annual Recognition Banquet.
At the banquet, Trio students graduating with an associate degree were honored in addition to Trio students with outstanding cumulative and semester GPAs. Trio student ambassadors were also recognized.
Under the direction of Marko Mohlenhoff, Trio Student Support Services is a federally funded outreach program at the college that serves and assists low-income individuals, first-generation college students and individuals with disabilities to progress through the academic pipeline.
“Being a TRiO student means having resources that other students do not,” said Josh Bullock, Lake Land College president. “By choosing education you are making the right choice.”
Students graduating from the college this semester with an associate degree who participated in the Trio program include: Judy Brown, Toledo; Kathleen Dunlap, Charleston; Kimberly McClellan, Mattoon; and Jamie Rexroat, Dieterich.
Trio student ambassadors recognized at the banquet were: Hollie Austin, Brocton; Heather Began, Altamont; Georgeanna Callow, Mattoon; and Michelle Humel, Casey.
“We’re very proud of all of our students in the Trio program,” said Mohlenhoff. “I would also like to acknowledge the Trio staff who helps make the program so successful at Lake Land.”
Trio staff includes: Victoria Zeter, advising counselor; Bill Jackson, learning skills specialist; and Braddi Reed, administrative assistant.
This year, one Trio student was honored with the Extra Mile Award. The recipient of this year’s award was Julia Fasking, Mattoon.
“The Extra Mile Award is given to students who have overcome the difficulties of life that might prevent them from finishing their degree—those who are persistent,” explained Mohlenhoff. “Julia will be a success because of her persistence, her courage and her past and present ability to adapt to the changes in her life.”
