Brenda Hunzinger honored with LLC’s Faculty Association Outstanding Service Award
Brenda Hunzinger, Lake Land College biological science instructor, shows up to work each day with more than just teaching classes on her mind. In fact, she often contemplates how she could not only better serve her students, but the college and community around her. For this reason, among many others, Hunzinger of Dieterich, will be presented with the 2013 Faculty Association Outstanding Service Award.
“Brenda goes above and beyond in her service to the college,” said Erica Hotsinpiller, mathematics instructor and award nominator. “While she serves on a multitude of committees and task forces, her investment to the college extends far past committee work.”
Hunzinger’s colleagues describe her as a positive example for other faculty members, who has selflessly invested much time and work while serving in a variety of capacities for the college. Hunzinger currently serves as the Lake Land College Faculty Association President and has held the positions of vice president and president-elect. She also has organized the annual Genetics Update Conference since 2002, an event that attracts attendees from all over the state of Illinois. She is also a member of the “BOOST” Scholarship Committee, which aims to build occupational opportunities in science and technology, a subject in which Hunzinger is very passionate.
“Brenda is also deeply committed to her students,” said Hotsinpiller. “She is an energetic, knowledgeable, helpful and inspiring instructor, and is a favorite instructor among our students. Her students describe her as caring, intelligent, challenging and fair.”
Hotsinpiller said that Hunzinger continually incorporates new teaching methods in the classroom and new activities to engage students. Furthermore, she said that her commitment to her students is showcased by the fact that Hunzinger serves as an independent study advisor and enjoys fostering her students’ interests in the sciences beyond the topics presented in the classroom.
Throughout her career, Hunzinger has worked to improve online learning standards, received the Excellence in Teaching Award from Eastern Illinois University, served as a textbook reviewer for four main educational publishers, and co-authored a supplemental text for “Discover Biology, 5th Edition.” She is also very active in her community, participating in her church in a variety of capacities and as a member of the Dieterich CUSD Parent Teacher Association and Dieterich Sports Backers Club. Hunzinger credits many people, especially her husband Steve and her parents Ken and Lou Ann Niemerg, for their continued support that allows her to reach her goals.
The award will be presented during the college’s 46th annual commencement ceremony on Friday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. in the Field House. With earning the Outstanding Faculty Award, Hunzinger has also been chosen to be the Lake Land College nomination for the Illinois Community College Trustee Association “Outstanding Service Award.” The award ceremony will be held in Chicago this summer.
“I truly consider it a blessing in my life to have a career that allows me to be happy by serving others – especially students,” said Hunzinger. “All of us at Lake Land College are here for a united purpose and that purpose is service.”
