Lake Land College offers early-bird dual enrollment courses for area high schoolers
April 14, 2014
Getting a jump start on college classes is made even easier with Lake Land College’s early-bird, dual enrollment courses!
This spring at Windsor High School, a group of high school students from Windsor, Stewardson and Strasburg have participated in an early-bird biology course, a four-hour, college-level class that can be applied toward an associate degree at Lake Land or transfer to a four-year school.
According to Director of Dual Credit and adjunct biology instructor, Brent Todd, dual enrollment courses offer high school students an opportunity to get a jump start on their college education.
“Unlike dual credit courses, in which students earn college credit at the same time as high school credit, dual enrollment is in addition to the students’ high school schedule,” said Todd.
Early-bird courses meet before the regular school day opens, often at 7 a.m., which allows high school students to participate in all high school course work and after-school extracurricular activities.
“The early-bird option is gaining popularity and we hope to be able to continuously offer these classes,” said Todd.
This fall, Introduction to Speech Communication will be offered at Windsor High School in the early-bird, dual-enrollment format. Other dual enrollment courses may be offered at Stewardson-Strasburg and Neoga as well.
“Putting together these courses takes special efforts on a lot of people’s parts,” said Todd. “Windsor principal Erik Van Hoveln has been a big supporter of Lake Land and early-bird dual enrollment courses. These courses would not be going without his efforts.”
Also, Todd said that the administration and staff at Stewardson-Strasburg High School have played an integral part in developing these courses, including Renee Frost, counselor; Mark Giertz, principal; and Michele Lindenmeyer, superintendent.
Students from Stewardson-Strasburg High School who are participating in the early-bird class at Windsor this semester include: Bryse Bugger, Mikiel Ewida and Christian Vonderheide. Windsor High School students include Autumn Bennett, Hayden Cole, Uriah Jones, Hannah Miller and Tristan Warner.
Early-bird, dual-enrollment classes are also being offered at Mattoon High School.
Students wanting to enroll in these classes should contact Van Hoveln with Windsor High School at (217) 459-2636 or Frost with Stewardson-Strasburg High School at (217) 682-3355.
