Adult Education Instructor

Description of Essential Functions (critical tasks):
Job Summary:
Implement classroom instruction for adult students in either an ABE/GED or ESL setting. ABE/GED Instructor will prepare the student for the High School Equivalency exam. ESL Instructors will prepare individuals with basic reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills in English as well as norms and practices of American Society.
Teach appropriate adult education course.
Maintain continual evaluation of student attendance and academic progress.
Promptly submit student records and attendance to the Director of Adult and Alternative Education or her designee.
Meet individually with adult education students to help in the transition to other adult education or college programs.
Develop professional relationships with the Illinois Department of Human Services, civic, and other social service agencies.
Establish and maintain relationships with outside social agencies and training programs that could assist students in achieving academic and personal success.
Assist with recruitment and retention of adult education students.
Responsible to obtain 8 hours of professional development per academic year.
Other duties as assigned.

Education:
Bachelor's degree required.
Experience:
Working with individuals with varying degrees of academic abilities and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Knowledge:
Excellent communication skills, empathetic listening skills, and good organizational skills.
Skills
Adult education philosophy, accurate record keeping.
Personal:
Ability to work with a variety of individuals from various socioeconomic backgrounds.
Physical:
Ability to travel, some evening work.
Machines and equipment used:
Calculator, personal computer, fax machine, and copier.
