Developmental Education Reform Act (DERA) Grant Summit

Promising Practices in Multiple Measures: DERA Grant Summit

Friday, April 19, 2024, 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m.

Hosted at Lake Land College, 5001 Lake Land Blvd., Mattoon, IL, Webb Hall 081

Lake Land College received a Developmental Education Reform Act (DERA) Implementation Project grant through the Illinois Community College Board in April 2023, which allowed the college to engage in a year-long, historical study of its implementation of multiple measures. The funding supported a consultation fee with the Charles A. Dana Center to ensure our research questions and practices were aligned with best practices in multiple measures placement along with a commitment from them to keynote and guide discussion at a summit.

The DERA Summit will be held on April 19, 2024. It provides an opportunity for faculty, staff, and administration to engage in a community of practice regarding multiple measures of placement. The keynote speaker will be Joan Zoellner of the Charles A. Dana Center, University of Texas at Austin.

Who is invited to attend?

  • English, math, or adult basic and secondary education faculty
  • Admissions staff
  • Counseling, TRiO, and Adult Education staff
  • Testing Center staff
  • Tutoring Center staff
  • other staff or faculty involved in multiple measures placement

Background of Keynote Speaker Joan Zoellner, Charles A. Dana Center

Joan leads the Launch Years Initiative, which seeks to usher in a new paradigm to support students with math pathways that are aligned to their goals. This work is currently taking place in 22 states, focusing on the last two years of high school and the first two years of postsecondary education. Joan’s leadership enables the member states to learn with and from one another, so that they can each develop and implement solutions that make sense within their unique contexts. She also presents findings at national and regional conferences of professional mathematics organizations to inform the mathematics community about best practices in teaching gateway mathematics students.

Joan previously served as the project lead for the Corequisite Research Design Collaborative, a national initiative designed to dramatically increase the number of racialized and low-income students enrolled in and completing corequisite supports that are based on sound, research-informed design principles. She also developed curricula for the Dana Center Mathematics Pathways, a transformative redesign to modernize entry-level college mathematics programs through working with states, systems, universities, and colleges.

Before the DERA Summit, would you please complete our pre-conference survey Pre-DERA Summit Survey (Google Doc form)? It requests information about your multiple measures policies and practices. Please gather any resources you have to answer some basic questions about your multiple measures practices. The survey should take no more than five minutes.
