TRiO Destination College – News and Events

Events

Summer Camp

Each summer, the TRiO Destination College program provides a summer camp for its members at Lake Land College. During the summer camp, students get the chance to learn and explore various college and career opportunities. Through fun games, activities, and discussions, students learn important lessons about their individual learning styles, personal interest, and so much more. Transportation to the camp and a free lunch is provided, making it an all-around AWESOME experience for our students!

Award Ceremony

One of our favorite things to do in TRiO Destination College is celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of our students! That is why each year we hold an end of the year award ceremony to do just that. During this ceremony, the TRiO team comes together with our amazing students and their families to celebrate our members for their participation, leadership, academic excellence and so much more.

Monthly School Visits

Each month, TRiO advisors visit each of our participating schools to talk to students just like you! We answer questions, lead discussions on certain topics such as college readiness, career and educational goals, and much more. Most of all, we have fun and amazing giveaways for our members who participate!

Google Classroom

Google Classroom is a digital platform that allows us to keep in touch and provide resources to our members. Google Classroom is a place where we will post resources and curriculum for our TRiO Destination College members to access.

Want to learn more about a topic? Have a question about financial aid in college? Google Classrooms has TRiO resources for that! Have a question about how to apply for college? Google Classroom has TRiO resources for that! Need a “how to” on completing the FAFSA? Google Classroom!

TRiO Destination College members who have questions about Google Classroom, or if you need help accessing the classroom link, do not hesitate to reach out to a TRiO Advisor!

College Visits & Trips

One of the most appealing parts of being a member of the TRiO Destination College program is the fun and exciting trips and college visits our students and staff get to partake in.

Throughout the school year, TRiO members are able to attend multiple college visits throughout the state of Illinois, as well as surrounding states, in order to gain exposure and information about the possibilities of pursing higher education after high school. On these visits, our students gain knowledge about the overall atmosphere of a college campus, important information about the college admissions process, financial aid and paying for college options, and so much more; but the most important part about these trips and visits is that we have so much fun while learning new things!

Although things are going to look a little different for the TRIO program for the 2020-2021 academic school year, it is still our main goal to provide our members with resources, workshops, and fun activities to keep our students active and engaged while meeting our programs goal of overcoming barriers to post-secondary education. Even though we currently might not be able to take our students on actual visits and trips, we have so many great ideas and experiences to provide and can’t wait to see what this year has in store for our TRiO Destination College members!

Workshops

TRiO Destination College provides many different events and workshops throughout the school year for its members. The purpose of these workshops is to educate, assist, and encourage students on certain topics and experiences. A few examples of the workshops our program offers to its members include:

  • TRiO Destination College Virtual Open House
This workshop is to essentially provide new and existing members of the program with overall information about what services and resources our program provides to its members, the mission and goals of the program, and  more important information about the program as a whole.
  • College Prep Night
This workshop is open to junior and senior TRiO Destination College members and their parents. Students will learn how to choose what college is the best fit for them, how to apply to the colleges of their choice, how to apply for financial aid through the FAFSA, and how to find other money for college. During this workshop, seniors and their parents will also have the opportunity to receive one-on-one assistance from a TRIO advisor who will walk you through the process of applying for college, completing and submitting the FAFSA application, and filling out scholarship applications.
  • ACT/SAT Prep
We understand how nerve-racking and intimidating these test can be for students, but these test scores play a big role in the college application and acceptance process. Don’t worry; TRiO Destination College is here to help prepare our students with the material and skills they will need to be successful on these big tests.
  • TRiO Destination College Bridge Program
This particular workshop is one that we offer to our seniors who have decided to start their higher education journey at Lake Land College. During this workshop, students will get to tour the campus, meet with leaders from specific departments that they are interested in, and learn how to access and maneuver the student portal, the Laker HUB.
