Advising FAQs

How do I find my advisor?

Visit the “WHO’S MY ADVISOR?” widget in the HUB or go to ‘Student Records’ > ‘Advisement Information’ in the sidebar in the HUB to find the following: change of major form, current major and advisor, advisor’s contact information and office hours, degree audit and Intent to Graduate.

Will my advisor sign me up for classes?

No. Your academic advisor will approve your course selection. Then, you will register through Navigate by choosing your modality and time for each course. Find instructions for how to register here.

How do I register once I meet with my academic advisor?

The process of advising is to approve course selection, based on the students’ academic goal. Once advised and cleared to register, all students choose their course times/modalities and register through Navigate. Instructions and resources for Navigate can be found here. Remember, the Navigate app is to view your schedule once you register. You can’t make schedule changes through the app.

How often do I have to connect with my advisor?

Monitor Important Dates in the HUB each semester for the last day to drop for a refund and withdraw from a class.

At least once each semester, if you are seeking a degree/certificate at Lake Land College. We have mandatory advisement at Lake Land College. You must receive advisement and clearance to register before you can register for each term.

Why don’t I have an assigned advisor on my Advisement Information page?

Only currently enrolled, degree/certificate seeking students are assigned to an advisor. Other students should contact Counseling Services at 217-234-5232 with their advising questions.

How do I know when to contact my advisor?

Watch your Laker mail and be sure you are opted in for text messages to ensure you are receiving all college business. In general, March is the advising season for summer and fall and October is the advising season for spring.

How do I schedule an appointment with my academic advisor?

Be sure to check your Laker mail. Most faculty advisors email their advisees with instructions for scheduling. You can find contact information (phone and email) for your advisor in the Navigate Mobile App at Resources, then People, then Academic Advisor.  Some advisors have enabled the ability to also schedule appointments through the app.

How do I drop/add a class?

When space is available, students can continue to add a full semester class through day 2 of the semester. Dates vary for mod 1 and mod 2 classes.

Removing yourself from a course before the refund deadline is considered a “DROP” at Lake Land College. Students may drop a course through the first 10 days of the semester for a 16 week course and through the first 5 days for an 8 week course. Contact Admissions at 217-234-5434 or admissions@lakelandcollege for drop dates for courses that are shorter than 8 weeks.  After the refund deadline, removing yourself from a course is considered a “WITHDRAWAL”; students who withdraw are not eligible for a refund.  In Navigate, both a DROP and a WITHDRAWAL happen with the Drop Course command.
