After You Apply

The information from your FAFSA will be sent electronically to the schools you listed on your application. Once the school receives this information, the Financial Aid Office will follow up with you through the mail. You can check the status of your FAFSA application and any associated documents in the Laker Hub. Log in and click “Financial Aid Checklist” in the “Student Finances” menu.

Verification Process

Some applicants will be selected for verification by the Department of Education or the Financial Aid Office. Verification is the process of reviewing the accuracy of the information you provided on the FAFSA.

Aid will not be awarded to applicants selected for verification until all required documents have been submitted and reviewed.

You can check the status of your FAFSA application and the necessary documents in the Laker Hub. Just log in and click on “Financial Aid Checklist” in the “Student Finances” menu.

Award Letter

Once your financial aid package is finalized, the Financial Aid Office will send an award letter to the mailing address we have on file. You can also access this information in the Laker HUB under “Financial Aid Checklist,” which is located in the “Student Finances” menu.

Important updates and information regarding financial aid will be sent to your Laker Mail, so please make sure to check it regularly!

Student Aid Index and Determining Financial Need

Financial Need is calculated by subtracting the Student Aid Index from the Cost of Attendance. This figure determines the maximum amount of need-based financial aid you can receive, which may include grants and subsidized loans. Additionally, you can utilize non-need-based loans, such as unsubsidized loans and PLUS loans, to cover the amount indicated by the Student Aid Index. Once your financial need has been determined, your award package will be created, potentially including a combination of tuition waivers, scholarships, grants, work-study opportunities, and/or loans.

Net Price Calculator

This calculator is designed to give current and prospective students, along with their families, an estimate of the net price they can expect to pay for college. The net price is calculated by taking the total cost of attendance— which includes tuition, required fees, books, supplies, room and board (meals), and other related expenses— and subtracting any estimated grant and scholarship aid. The estimates are based on what similar students have paid in a previous year.

Special/Unusual Circumstances

Special Circumstance

The FAFSA applies a standardized formula to determine eligibility for Title IV financial aid. However, certain circumstances may justify adjustments based on changes in a student’s or their family’s income, living situation, or expenses. The Financial Aid Office will review these situations on a case-by-case basis upon request. For more details, please contact our office.

Unusual Circumstance

Under very limited circumstances, a dependent student may be able to submit the FAFSA without parental information due to unusual circumstances. If you believe you have an unusual circumstance and cannot provide parental information, please contact our office for more details.
