National Safety Council’s 4-Hour Defensive Driving Course
This 4-hour course is offered in Effingham and Mattoon, as well as online. If you have received a traffic citation and are not required to appear in court, you may be eligible for this program. You are only allowed to complete the course one time in a 12-month period.
For participants who received their traffic citation in Effingham, Coles, Moultrie, Marion, Shelby or Cumberland counties in Illinois:
- The county will provide you with a registration form for the program. The registration form and fees are to be turned in to the Circuit Clerk’s Office, and it will then be forwarded on to the Traffic Safety Program Specialist at Lake Land College.
- When possible, we will do our best to meet your preferred days and times for the course. Once you have been registered in a class, you will receive a confirmation letter in the mail that includes the date, time, location and directions for the class.
- If you have chosen to complete the online course, an additional fee does apply which will be billed to you by Lake Land College.
- Upon completion of the course, Lake Land College with send notification of your completion to the appropriate county. You will also receive a certificate of completion in the mail to keep for your records.
For participants who have received their traffic citation in any other area:
- There are two ways that you can register for our program. You can print the registration form by clicking on the register by mail link and mail to the Lake Land College Traffic Safety Program. You can also register online by clicking the register online link. Once this form is completed, it will be sent directly to the Traffic Safety Program Specialist.
- The cost is $50 for the classroom course and $40 for online course in Shelby, Marion, Cumberland, Moultrie, Effingham and Coles counties or $75 for all other counties. This fee will be billed to you by Lake Land College.
- When possible, we will do our best to meet your preferred days and times for the course. Once you have been registered in a class, you will receive a confirmation letter in the mail that includes the date, time, location and directions for the class.
- Upon completion of the course, you will receive a certificate of completion. It is your responsibility to submit this certificate to the appropriate county.
To all participants:
- If you are unable to attend your assigned class, please give 48-hour notice to reschedule. You are allowed one reschedule at no cost. Any additional rescheduling will result in a $25 charge for each rescheduled class.
- If your mailing address changes, please notify the Traffic Safety Program Specialist at Lake Land College immediately. The program is not responsible for lost or undeliverable mail.
- All fees are non-refundable.
