Federal Work Study
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Federal Work Study Program?
The Federal Work Study program is a need-based program that provides opportunities for eligible students to earn part-time wages through on-campus employment. Earnings can be used to help pay for the student’s cost of attendance at Lake Land College. In order for a student to be eligible, they need to be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours and meet Satisfactory Academic Progress standards.
How do I apply?
You must submit a work study application via your Laker Hub account. You will find the application under the Financial Aid menu.
When should I submit my work study application?
Submit your work study application NOW! Positions are limited, so not all students who apply will be placed in a position. Work study positions are not guaranteed and your award will go unused if you are not placed in a position.
How am I selected for a work study application?
Students are matched with work study positions on campus according to their skills, employment preferences, and the date the application is received. Your application will be reviewed by the Financial Aid Office and forwarded to the appropriate department supervisors for consideration. If you are selected for an interview, you will be contacted by a department supervisor.
How much can I earn?
The annual amount/limits vary based on academic year funding or grant rules. This amount can be reduced or revoked if at any time the student receives additional resources (scholarships, third party awards, etc.) which would cause the student to exceed his or her financial need. The student and supervisor are responsible for keeping track of how much the student has earned each pay period and the remaining balance.
What is the hourly wage?
Students are paid the current state minimum wage.
How will I get paid?
Hours worked by the student are recorded on a paper timesheet, which are then reported and submitted electronically via an online timesheet in the HUB at the end of each earning period. Approvals from both the immediate supervisor and the Federal Work Study coordinator in Financial Aid are required. Students are paid every two weeks via direct deposit or a mailed check.
How many hours can I work?
The student’s work schedule is established by the supervisor and student. Generally, a student will work 8-10 hours a week between classes or on days when the student does not have class. Most positions will have only weekday, daytime hours. There are limited positions with evening and weekend hours.
