General Education Requirements

The purpose of general education is to provide all students with learning experiences that are necessary to enable them to maintain responsible and satisfying The purpose of general education is to help students develop foundational knowledge, critical thinking skills and multiple perspectives to engage responsibly as informed professionals within society. To that end, the Board of Trustees of Lake Land College has adopted the following Laker Learning Competencies as institutional learning outcomes for general education:

·         Communication: Students communicate through the exchange of information.

·         Creative Thinking & Problem Solving: Students think creatively to solve problems.

·         Critical Thinking: Students connect knowledge from various disciplines to formulate logical conclusions.

·         Global & Cultural Literacy: Students distinguish that society is a culturally diverse and global environment with differing opinions, practices and ideas.

·         Information & Technology Literacy: Students evaluate information effectively using the appropriate technological tools.

·         Professional Skills & Ethics: Students demonstrate professional skills and ethical accountability.

·         Quantitative Literacy: Students analyze data and mathematical patterns in real-life situations.

·         Scientific Literacy: Students apply the scientific process to real-life situations.

Inclusion of Human Relations in Curriculum

It is the policy of Lake Land College to include in its General Education requirements course work on improving human relations. This policy includes improvement in understanding about race, ethnicity, gender and related issues as they impact on racism, gender bias, and sexual harassment. The General Education course work addresses the issues of race, ethnicity, gender, and other issues as they relate to racism and sexual harassment as a part of its discipline. Each discipline includes course work which is appropriate to that area of study.

General Education Requirements for Transfer Degrees

Lake Land College has adopted the General Education Core Curriculum of the Illinois Articulation Initiative as the general education requirement for the Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees effective with students entering the College summer 1998 or thereafter. Associate in Engineering Science The AES degree is designed for students to complete some of the General Education requirements at the senior institution.
