What is the difference between honors courses and standard courses?

Faculty teaching honors courses will assign thought-provoking readings and projects and guide and advise students on how to successfully meet these challenges. Honors courses should not merely generate more work for the student, but rather provide work that is more appropriate for high-ability, motivated students. Honors-level performance will be developed over time, as mentored by the faculty member.

The objective of the increased effort in these courses is to improve the depth and thoroughness of understanding of the course material, enabling students to gain a more profound appreciation of the subject matter. Students’ learning outcomes should demonstrate that they have analyzed problems, evaluated possible decisions or actions, and drawn reasonable conclusions or generated unique solutions. These learning outcomes may be as varied as the students themselves.

Students may experience a variety of learning activities, which could include collaborative learning, field experience, debates, documented projects, interviews, service projects, presentations, or discussion panels.

To determine the rigor of honors courses, Lake Land College uses Bloom’s Taxonomy, a well-known description of levels of educational performance. What is honors independent study?

Independent study is an opportunity for a student to investigate an area of interest that goes beyond a Lake Land College course. A minimum of 30 hours of time is expected for each one hour of credit in independent study.
